When Jordan’s Queen Rania Foundation launched the Arab world’s first non-profit Arabic-language learning platform in 2014, it was tapping into a growing trend. The Edraak website offers Moocs (massive open online courses) that are supported by top global universities and are available to anyone with internet access.

Today, the platform reports that it has more than 900,000 registered users with figures growing by 1,000 a day and reaches people in 22 countries in the Middle East and north Africa. The majority of students come from Egypt, Jordan, Algeria, Saudi Arabia and Morocco, with significant numbers in the UAE, Syria, Palestine, Iraq and Yemen.
